love and loath.

love:
-being done with taxes. thank you, father.
-stake conference today. the member of the 70 that visited was hilarious.
-sunday naps.
-shakespeare. the more i read of him, the more i absolutely adore him.
-discussing which man from little house on the prairie is most attractive with my mom. (decision, none of them. to quote her: "I would poke myself in the eye before I would pick Charles.")

loath:
-meetings that go over time. i have issues with attention.
-people telling me what to do. it's probably my biggest pet peeve.
-forgetting homework until 10 pm the night before it's due.
-eating too much junk food. (gym tomorrow say what?)
-people telling my i'm doing my job wrong. especially when i'm not. (i guess that plays into people telling me what to do. i really hate that. maybe i shouldn't be so stubborn.)

jane: the closet hipster.

here's another of my obsessions.
HIPSTERS.
for real. especially men in plaid button ups and glasses. mmmm yes please.
and indie music. i'm rather fond of that.
so, for halloween, i decided to be a hipster (well, originally i was going to be a cat lady with my roommate, but...who knew DI could be so uncooperative??) out came the sock bun and old 3D glasses and skinny jeans and plaid shirt.
*(side note, i texted penelope about my costume and her response was: "haha nice. So          skinny jeans and a scarf? Oh wait. That's what you always wear haha.")
fabulous, no?
you KNOW i will be wearing this to class tomorrow. what UP.
i'm really excited.

also, in response to penelope's post yesterday, i am posting my new indie album.
in short, halloween this year is going to be fabulous.
sincerely,

ps, if you feel like being a hipster yourself, just not so sure how to go about it, watch this tutorial. i found it rather informative.

Move

When I was pretty little, maybe five or six, my mother signed me and my best friend/cousin up for a tap and ballet class.

I remember loving it. Racing to be the first one to switch shoes, galloping around the room like ponies to warm up, and perfecting my plie.

My mom remembers I begged her every day to quit. I don't quite recall that part.

I kinda regret not continuing dance, although when I think about it.. I don't know what I would have done with it. join my highschool dance team? no thanks.

I might take a dance class one of these semesters though. just for fun.

The only claim to fame I have left over from my dancing days is I do get asked fairly often if I am a dancer, (I think it's because I subconsciously point my toes all the time), and I love a good dance routine. here are a few favorites

and this isn't really a routine, but it is gorgeous. if you haven't seen it you need to!

Nails! take two!

Last night I redid my nails, as well as my sisters, with the same method i talked about here now that I have the method down, this go round was much much cuter.

things i learned.
-let the nail polish dry completely on the plastic before you try to peel it off
- it works best if you pain the nail the base color you want and let that dry, and then paint a coat of clear to put the decals on.
- dont thy to trim your decals once they are on. nail polish remover the excess. its magic.
- I put a ton of polish on the ziplocks. and didn't use it all. once its dry you can store it for the next manicure.

The possibilities with this are endless with this. I am looking forward to lots of manicures.

DIY Maxi Dress/Skirt

I've been seeing lots of maxi dress how-to's on pinterest lately, so I decided to be crafty and make one of my own. I was talking to my dear friend Jen and she went with me to the store and helped me pick out and find the right fabric. She's just fabulous.
Belt: Forever 21. Cardigan: Deb
I decided to just make it up as I go, because I didn't like a lot of the patterns that I had found. I am very pleased with how it turned out.
Disregard the wind.
First, I bought a yard and a half of jersey knit at Joann's (such a glorious store).
Second, fold the fabric in half hot dog style and pin down the open side at a diagonal, so the top fits snugly around your upper bust area (what is that even called?) or around your waist if you are making a skirt.
Third, sew down the line of pins, taking them out as you move down. You could cut away the fabric first (I didn't), just make sure to leave a seem allowance of at least a 1/4 inch.
Fourth, check it out. Try it on. Make sure it fits how you want it to.
Fifth, Cut off excess material. I didn't do this earlier because I am prone to making mistakes and wanted leeway just in case. Turns out I didn't need to unpick or anything this time, so I could have just cut off the fabric earlier.
Sixth, make a hem at the top, just to make it look nicer. You really don't need on at the bottom, especially as it is a jersey knit and won't fray.
And that's it my friends. I added a belt and a cardigan to make it more flattering and modest. Also, I can fold mine down and it looks fabulous as a skirt as well.

Song Win

Really. I'm a little bit obsessed with this man. Fine By Me is frankly adorable.
Because, you know, sometimes it's difficult to remember the sunny side of life. Despite the difficulty now, the sun will come out in the morning. *Also note the appearance of Rainn Wilson in the second video. AKA Dwight K. Schrute.

Jane's Obsession.

Ok, so I have many obsessions.
This is just today's.
Meet...
RALPH WALDO EMERSON.
He lead the Transcendentalist movement in America and wrote lots of essays and poems that are KICK BUTT.
Let me put a few quotes down to show you:
"We will walk on our own feet; we will work with our own hands; we will speak our own minds."
"Character is higher than intellect. Thinking is the function. Living is the functionary."
"There is some awe mixed with the joy of our surprise, when this poet, who lived in some past world, two or three hundred years ago, says that which lies close to my own soul..."
"Man hopes. Genius creates. To create,--to create,--is the proof of a divine presence. Whatever talents may be, if the man create not, the pure efflux of the Deity is not his:--cinders and smoke, there may be, but not yet flame."
“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.”
“To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and to endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know that even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
“Our greatest glory is not in never failing, but in rising up every time we fail.”
"Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind."

If anyone were to get me a book of his essays for Christmas or something...I would not mind at all.
Truly glorious.

A joke for you

How did the hipster burn his mouth?
.
.
.
.
.
He drank his coffee before it was cool

Bahahaha. you're welcome.

The Sister Date.

Today I was bored. And so was Emmie, my sister. We were pinteresting and found this recipe.
"Oreo cheesecake cupcakes?!?!" We said. "Heck yes!!"
So we embarked to Ridley's to get oreos and then got started!
The Process:
(From the top left): Oreos in the base of cupcake liners. MOUNDS of cream cheese. Adding sour cream. Mixing them together. The oh-so-important sugar. Can't forget the salt! Eggs. REAL vanilla. Oreos in the blender. Blended oreos. Putting the cupcakes in the oven. Side photo of finished process.
(Middle): THE FINISHED THING!!!

The sisters:
(From the top right down): Me, in all my glory, struggling with the mixer. Emmie, dumping mounds of cream cheese in the bowl. Emmie, mixing the oreo bits in. The popcorn we ate as we waited for them to cook. Eric, Lucy, Petey and Emmie, watching Phineas and Ferb while we waited some more.
(Middle): Me and Emmie, after consuming the cupcakes. Happy happy girls are we!

Of course, we didn't do this alone. As I mentioned, I was having issues with the mixer...so we recruited our Dad to assist us in the matter. Aren't dads wonderful? I say yes.
But try these. They are wonderful.

Off to watch Ramona and Beezus with Em.

Bake on, my friends.
